The number WAS eight.

Last night I worked WA1UZO on 20m JT65 for my first QSO in the lovely state of Connecticut.

That leaves me with eight states to go for WAS Basic. I still need Alabama, Delaware, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, West Virginia and Wisconsin on any band and any mode (except CW, sorry, I am no-code*) to get the Basic award.  (JT65 or JT9 preferred, but I can do phone if I must.)

For WAS Digital I need those eight states plus Arkansas and North Dakota.

Since I don't spend tons of time in the shack, that's not bad for me for just since April.

* I learned code in the Boy Scouts forty years ago. I had no use for it after that so it went away. Now I have no time to spend learning code. I do hope to find some time in the next year or so to get my code back, but it's not like it's on my bucket list.

Whoda thunk it.

I have (as I may have noted below at some point) an LDG YT-450 tuner that goes with my Yaesu FT-450D.  I actually have two of them, the first one having had the smoke let out of it one time when I was on 6 meters and forgot to kick it out.  The second one has never really been happy, and in fact seems to have an advanced case of Alzheimer's, because whenever I switch bands, I have re-tune from scratch.  That isn't supposed to be the way of things, and I figured one of these days I'd get another tuner (possibly the new YT-1200) and send the YT-450 back to LDG to see if they could figure it out.  But the YT-1200 doesn't seem to be generally-available yet and I got tired of waiting.

So just for laughs and giggles, I purchased an MFJ-949E manual tuner and hooked it up this weekend.

Holeee shite.  The difference is like night and day.  I worked W1AW/KL7 on 20m SSB on Saturday and it sounded like she was right there in the room with me.  Shoot, I even worked a Brit on 17m SSB, and he gave me a 55 (unfortunately I had to give him a 45 and it was probably worse than that, really, but I was able to pull him out of the noise).  And digital modes, shoot, I was seeing prefixes I'd never seen before.

The only problem, of course, is that it's a MANUAL tuner, so of course I have been keeping copious notes of what settings I'm using for what.  But hell, I'm not complaining.

People bitch about MFJ all the time but in this case (other than a bad front panel fit that keeps the meter light switch from pushing in and out expeditiously) I'm certainly happy with their product.

Disturbing.

There is a thread at eHam titled "FCC Fines" that I found a bit disturbing, as there is some undercurrent suggestion that the FCC ought to spend more time and money going after those who violate its rules, apparently under some misconception that the FCC is a law enforcement agency.  The argument is based on the recent NALs issued against a couple of hams who have been causing intentional QRN on 14.313 etc. for years, and unhappiness about a) how long it has taken to get to this point, and b) the large amount of the fines (the idea being, if they'd have moved faster and imposed lower fines, like traffic ticket amount fines, these hams would have been shown the error of their ways along time ago, paid up, and become model hams as a result.  Yeah, right.)

So I got to thinking about how the FCC actually lays and collects fines.  Well, the fact is, the FCC doesn't actually work that way, because it has no statutory authority to do anything but yank a ham's license for violation of Part 97 rules.  (Actually, it's the same statutory authority it has to regulate commercial broadcast stations under whatever part that is, and I'm too lazy to go look it up right now.)

Because of that, the FCC issues NALs (Notices of Apparent Liability) proposing fines based on its interpretation of its regulations, and informs the offender that they now have a choice of contributing the full amount to the US Treasury, negotiating a lower amount and contributing that amount to the US Treasury, or going to court to contest the NAL in its entirety.  Note that in neither of the first two cases does the money go to the FCC, other than indirectly as part of the national budget.  And note carefully that word, "propose".  It isn't "levy" or "collect" or "impose", and that's for a reason — no statutory authority!

If the amateur refuses to pay after all of that, I think — if I understand it correctly — that the only recourse the FCC has of its own accord is to revoke the amateur's license and "red light" him for future license applications.  They would have to turn any proceedings for monetary and property forfeiture over to the DOJ, because they do not have that kind of authority.

So in sum,the FCC says, we have found you in violation of regulation blah blah section blah blah subsection blah.  We therefore propose that you pay $xxxxx (with a minimum of $5000 I believe) because you have been a bad operator.  If you agree, pay the Treasury.  If you agree but can't pay the full amount that we propose, we'll negotiate.  If you disagree, well, shoot, we'll have to turn this over to the DOJ for action, because Congress doesn't let us have our own administrative courts and judges and doesn't allow us to issue warrants and attach funds and all that fun law enforcement stuff.

We say we want the FCC to go after these people, and that's well and good; that's what the Enforcement Bureau is for.  The current enforcement regime seems very benign to me and generally prevents the FCC from bothering the occasional ham who accidentally QRNs 14.076MHz because he forgot to turn his linear off before operating JT65 (which seemed like what was happening yesterday right after I posted that bitchy post below), or who forgot to sign every 10 minutes during his QSO.  That's where the OO's should be stepping in and writing the occasional "be a good ham" note.

OK, so now comes this proposal, or insinuation, or whatever it was that I felt like the poster was trying to say on eHam, i.e., "FCC should be like traffic cops and issue small fines for [what amount to significant] regulatory violations."  To this I demur and object; it is a slippery slope that none of us want to slide down.  Do we really want the FCC to have confiscatory powers over and above revocation of licenses as some sort of incentive to spend more time and money on enforcement?  Think about it:  Do you really want the potential of seeing the FCC on your doorstep for some minor operating misstep, like accidentally running too much power, or forgetting to sign every 10 minutes, or, God forbid, using in a fit of madness a bit of colorful language on the bands?  (And don't say you don't make operating mistakes and/or sometimes let slip the dogs of cursewords.  We all make mistakes.)

When all is said and done, we need to be careful what we wish for.  Sure, it took 16 years in KZ8O's case to get him a $22,000 NAL, and it may take just as long to ever see anything come of that, since he'll undoubtedly take it to court and contest it.  But I'd rather see the FCC spend their time going after the truly egregious offenders than for it to have confiscatory incentive to come after me or you or some other poor slob ham for some minor, momentary infraction of the rules.  Give any government bureau incentive-based enforcement powers, and the next thing we'd know, they'll have SWAT teams and be executing no-knock raids on the unsuspecting (and generally innocent) population.

May I just say…

…that if you are going to operate JT65, first you learn the proper way to make a JT65 QSO???

Because I'm OCD, I hesitated to make my first JT65 QSO until I understood this.  I found this page which was a big help.  Scrolling down the page, NW7US suggests that the proper format of a JT65 QSO is something like this (from the linked page):

K1JT W6DTW CM97  (A second station answers CQ w/ grid square)
W6DTW K1JT -18   (CQ station sends signal report)
K1JT W6DTW R-16  (Answering station sends "R" + sig report)

And the thing is, you have little macro buttons to push that handle this for you.  JT65-HF-HB9HQX-Edition even lights the next one up for you in blue so you know which one to choose.

So why in the world is someone doing something like

This is not the first time this has happened to me.  I don't understand how anyone can take a highly-standardized QSO format like this (it's not a ragchewing mode, people!) and still managed to fuck it up.

Man, the bands are wide open.

Earlier this morning, I made a JT65 contact on 20 meters with VK3VT in Victoria, Australia.  That is my most distant contact to date, 9,709 miles.  I also saw one of the Antarctic stations (8J1RL) come in, but only briefly, and I wasn't in a position to make a contact.

People have been saying that 6 is wide open, too, with some crazy distances being reported.  If they stay open tonight I may try calling CQ on 6 for awhile.

Happy Field Day

I'm not at my usual QTH, unfortunately.  I was planning to attend Field Day out at Camp Belzer with the Indianapolis Radio Club and the WD9BSA group, but my mind was operating on two parallel scheduling tracks and I had forgotten that the XYL and I were headed for Florida the same weekend.  And yes, vacation with the XYL trumps Field Day.  I am not this guy:

Since I don't have a go box set up yet, I gave up on the idea of taking an HF radio and accoutrements on the plane.  I thought I might wander up to where the local radio club is set up for Field Day and see if the would let me make a few contacts, but it's so durn hot and humid here that I decided to stay at the hotel instead.  I am monitoring 2 meters though, just for kicks — and wearing my Field Day T-Shirt!

As I was setting up my HT last night, I discovered that the local repeaters all use TSQL rather than just tone on the input like the vast majority of our toned repeaters do back home.  That was kind of a shock, since I've really only ever operated in Indy.

The other interesting thing was that we had some fairly heavy weather here yesterday afternoon, so I started looking for a Skywarn net.  But they don't seem to have a Skywarn group here!  So I wasn't able to report the waterspout that I saw….

G5RV is up

My Saturday was spent coaxing a G5RV to get up into the trees and not get stuck under inconvenient branches. But persistence seems to have been rewarded; I just worked KU4BP in North Carolina on 3.787 LSB and it was like he was sitting in the room next to me. He gave me a 59 and said I had a solid signal into North Carolina. I was so tired at that point that I started to log it as a 40M contact because I'd been on 40 right before I switched bands and heard him calling CQ…I had forgotten that I had switched bands and was stunned when LoTW told me I had the wrong band and I realized I was getting out like that on 80!

I will say that the boy and I got really lucky this morning. The neighbor had a couple of guys doing tree work for him, and one of them saw us trying to get the rope over the limb of one of the trees and came over to ask what we were doing. I told him and he offered to climb the tree for me. I said, how much is that going to cost me? He hemmed and hawed a bit and finally said he'd climb both trees and throw the rope over for $50. I figured that was a bargain for something I wasn't about to do myself…

(I was so tired last night that apparently I forgot to mention that our tree climber had spikes and safety equipment.  He was a pro, not just some guy climbing a tree for $50.  I was kind of amazed that he was working tree trimming and not as a lineman for the local electric utility.  He was that good.)

Indianapolis 6 Meter Experimental Net, 17 Apr 2014

Tonight the net met on 52.700 at 19:30 ET with the following check-ins:

KB9 BVO Victor*
N9 CXI Tom
K9 JWP Jim
N9 QVO David
KC9 YTJ Nathan

Net control was Tom, N9CXI, and the net ran from 19:30 ET to 19:45 ET.

The question for the evening was, are you 6 meter mobile capable?  BVO said that he could not go mobile at the moment although he could use his 6m-capable HT.  JWP said that his FT897 could be mobile but he does not have an antenna for that purpose.  YTJ said that he did not have a current rig for 6m mobile (although his FT-450D is alleged to be a mobile transceiver).  QVO did not have a 6m mobile either.  CXI not only has the equipment for 6m mobile in his truck, but was conducting the net from there this evening.

At 19:38 ET the net went QSY to the 53.010 repeater.  We exercised the repeater but no further operators joined us (and we lost QVO).  After calling for any late check-ins, Tom N9CXI closed the net at 19:45 ET.

Worked Hawai’i at 5:17AM local

I had a hard time sleeping last night and so I got up to play on the radio at about 5AM.  I didn't want to make a lot of noise so I was operating PSK31.

Unfortunately I sat there for some time and wasn't able to work anyone.  Then at 0917 UTC I was calling CQ and got a response from W7NX on Oahu, 4326.2 miles away.  Not the longest distance I've hit yet, but I've only made Europe once, and that was IK4ALM in Italy at 4817.3 miles.

W7NX said I was transmitting a tone off to the side of my signal and sent me a picture of his waterfall:

Image559.pngOK, so that's weird.  I guess I wll have to investigate.  Because I'm antenna-poor, I've been running 100 watts, which is probably overdriving the antenna (it's rated at 100 watts, but that and five bucks will get you a latte at Starbucks).  W79X said

You can see that there is a straight line that represents a constant frequency tone. Your BPSK31 signal is at a lower frequency so I was able to copy you, but you can see how the tone is pumping my AGC making my noise floor drop as soon as your transmitter turns on. Your BPSK signal is not as strong as the tone.

I’ve been trying to think of a likely cause but nothing comes immediately to mind.

 I don't know if running too much power would cause something like this or not.  It sure looks like the FT-450D is transmitting a carrier about 1kc above the data signal, though.

I've been running digital modes for quite some time now, and looking back at this post, I want to frickin' facepalm and headdesk myself.  100 watts on PSK31.  What a moron.  Sigh.
